This Quebec paper products company has in the recycling biz ince 1964. Today, the company is Canada’s pre-eminent recycler of paper. Since 2005, we have presented their paper products on the site as environmentally-preferable choices. Notably:
- Management of Residual Materials: Already a recycler of residual materials drawn from elsewhere, Cascades plants also recover 62% of their own waste products. The industrial complex at Kingsey Falls has recently received a level 3 distinction from the ICI ON RECYCLE! program. According to several indicators, the 17 facilities at the Kingsey Falls complex achieve a 99.2% reuse rate of all potential residual materials.
- Water Conservation: Cascades uses an average of 10 m3 of water per metric ton of paper 6 times less than the Canadian industry consumption levels, which average 60 m3. What's more, the company has adopted hydrogen peroxide and sodium hydrosulfite as alternatives to chlorine bleach in the whitening process and thus produce effluents which are less toxic to aquatic ecosystems.
- Accountability: Cascades is a participant in the Carbon Disclosure Project. Since 2006, the company reports its greenhouse gas emissions and the measures it is taking to reduce them.
